October 9, 2009

“One need only glance at the 2009 US News and World Report special issue on ‘Solving the College Crisis’ to see the problem,” writes Harry Boyte in a post today for the American Democracy Project of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

“The lead editorial defines colleges as ‘like other industries,’ and students as ‘customers, voting with their feet.'” Boyte concludes that “we need to end detachment in our institutions and ourselves from civic life.”

Read the rest of Boyte’s post, which sets the stage for a November 3 webinar for higher education stakeholders titled Agents and Architects of Democracy: The Struggle for the Future of Higher Education.
