Focus of Warrior to Citizen Campaign in 2010

February 28, 2010
At the beginning of the year, members of the Warrior to Citizen Campaign working group decided to focus on four issue areas in 2010:
  • Veterans employment
  • Access to higher education/support for student veterans
  • Women’s issues
  • Workplace issues for spouses of service members
The working group meets monthly at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs and includes veterans across services, and representatives from a number of communities around the state, faith organizations, institutions of higher education, Minnesota National Guard, Army Reserves, Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans, U.S. Dept. of Labor and Minnesota Dept. of Employment and Economic Development.
Other work–such as efforts to debut a pilot veterans treatment court in June 2010,and to continue the successful Healing of Memories workshop and student journalist summer “embed” –is ongoing.
The Warrior to Citizen Campaign is a grassroots effort to support returning veterans and their families across Minnesota. Since May 2007, the Center for Democracy and Citizenship has convened the working group to engage citizens in public work. The process has been organic and led to community-based action as well as statewide projects and policy change.
