Happy 20th Birthday, Public Achievement!

May 21, 2010

“Government’s not going to fix the kind of problems we face,” said Public Achievement creator Harry Boyte in the video We the (Young) People. “Public Achievement is the model of what has to happen if we are going to do the kind of problem-solving we need to do as a society.”

That was in 2000. The kids interviewed for the video–including kindergartners who used Public Achievement to get a swingset for their school–are now teenagers and young adults. The team members and coaches who came after them include Americans as well as young people and adults from Northern Ireland and Scotland, the Gaza Strip and West Bank, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Kosova, Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, South Africa and Guatemala.

Today, we mark the 20th birthday of a model and a method that has allowed thousands of young (and not so young) people to understand that they can be powerful public actors and develop the skills to take action on real issues that affect their lives.

Happy Birthday, Public Achievement!
